SPSG Celebrates our 12-year Anniversary
Hard to fathom it's been 12 years already. I often feel like Day 1 was not that long ago. I truly believe time flies when you love what you do, and the community gives you their support.
I think most entrepreneurs can relate to this: what it felt like on that first day, week. I had worked for the USPTO and another patent search company for years, and I wanted to express patent search excellence in my own way. I met with a couple colleagues, and told them about my plans to open my firm. I left those meetings with a handshake, nothing formal. At that time, Jillian and I had our first-born, Lacey, and Benjamin was on the way. We had also just purchased our first home. There was a bit of pressure to say the least, but I believed in our vision.
In February 2013, I started SPSG. I got an 80 sq ft office in Pasadena. I drove to the office that morning in my hatchback Toyota. I got a cup of coffee and assembled a desk I bought from Ikea, connected my computer, and hit the pavement hard. I would spend 12 hours a day, cold-calling, cold-emailing, and connecting with the patent community. I would often come home exhausted and with a hoarse voice. In a relatively short time, search requests starting flowing in, and I found myself that first year in need of some extra help. The belief started to galvanize.
I kept expanding our vision as to what patent search quality truly is. You see, during a search, we gain so much knowledge of that space. The real challenge is how to distill that information down into something digestible and useful. We wanted to innovate patent search services.
Fast-forward to today, it's pretty awesome to reflect on our where we started, to where we are today. From the ambition of Visualize IP, to being sought-after expert witnesses in prior art search and estoppel, to working with the Fortune 500 and prominent law firms around the world, I could not have imagined this on Day 1. I am incredibly proud of our teams.
I still truly feel like we are just getting started in many ways. I'd like to deeply thank each and every one of you for believing in us. We will always be here to help you in whatever way we can. Onward. 🤝
